Ideas for Celebrating Baby Showers In Times of Covid-19
The health crisis has changed our lives on so many levels. Not only are we more aware of how precious our health is, but we also celebrate special occasions differently. Although there is a health crisis out there and you need to be extra cautious, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to celebrate your baby shower. Here are some ideas for organizing an alternative baby shower during these uncertain times.
Before reading our recommendations, it’s important to consider safety above all. As the CDC states, the best way to stay safe and in touch with others is via online platforms. Small group activities outdoors or indoors with proper ventilation are also a safe option. However, every country, region, and town has specific rules and regulations regarding festive gatherings. Familiarize yourself with them beforehand to understand your limits and start planning accordingly.
1. Virtual baby shower
Many things have moved online and baby showers are no exception. But just because it’s online it doesn’t mean you cannot get the joy of traditional gatherings! Pick a virtual medium Skype, Zoom, Meet, etc. If you want a bit of help, ask one of your closest friends or family members to be the host. Then, choose baby shower games or activities you can easily adapt to your preferred platform. Here are some great examples!
● Pop quiz: Play trivia with a set of questions about the parents-to-be. What’s mom’s favorite movie? How many kids does Dad want to have? Or, you can test your guests’ knowledge about parenthood and newborns. Ask them how much sleep do newborns get per day or how many diaper changes they need, for example. There are plenty of platforms that allow you to create your own quizzes and play with your pals in real time, perfect for your virtual baby shower.
● Guess the price: Either you or the host holds up various baby items in front of the camera. Your guests will need to guess the right price or an approximate one. This is one of the most popular baby shower games and always succeeds in getting everyone laughing.
● Baby predictions: Towards the end of your virtual baby shower, guests can write down and read out loud predictions about your baby. These can be about the arrival date, weight, length, eye color, personality, etc. Once your baby is here, the person who got the most answers right can get a prize.
● Nursery tour: If your crowd is not the game type, you can still make things interesting by doing a nursery tour. Give them an exclusive view of how you have acclimated your home for your little one!
Reward your winners with e-gift cards. Your life will be much easier as you won’t need to send prizes via postal mail.
2. Snailmail baby shower
Ask your guests to send their presents or cards by postal mail. First things first, send your invitations by mail or any virtual medium of your preference. In your invitation, encourage your friends and relatives to get you all the essentials or send greeting cards with their top parenting tips. If you have a registry, you can add it or attach it to the invitation card. And, if you would like to feel the collective love, you could always send a baby shower guest book for everyone to sign and write in. This requires a bit of coordination to ensure the book gets passed around and returned to you in time!
3. Drive-thru baby shower
Drive-thru baby parties became a popular way to celebrate special occasions during the pandemic. As the name suggests, your guests drive by and greet you from a distance. You can do it parade-style, with your friends honking, waving, or playing music. Or, you can schedule 10 to 15-minute windows for each car to stop by and have a quick chat with you (wearing masks and keeping a safe distance). Regardless of your choice, you can get creative! Encourage your guests to decorate their cars for the occasion with balloons or banners. Set up a special area for gift-dropping or be careful when receiving presents. If possible, decorate your home’s exterior and hand out individually wrapped gifts for the well-wishers.
4. Outdoors baby shower
If you have plenty of space in your back garden, you can opt for an outdoor, socially distanced baby shower. If not, host a picnic in a park with a small guest list. Be mindful of your area’s restrictions for social distancing. Just to be safe, mention in your invitations that all attendees should wear a mask and keep a safe distance from one another. If you’re serving food, opt for disposable, single-use utensils and cups.
5. A “meet the baby” event
Technically not a baby shower, but still a solid idea! Once your baby is born and you are recovered enough to meet people, you can plan a “meet the baby” gathering. Instead of having lots of guests in your place at the same time, you can schedule separate time slots. This will give your loved ones the perfect opportunity to offer their advice, well-wishes, and presents. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you and your guests are following the safety guidelines correctly.
